Indonesia has taken a major step toward modernizing its urban transportation network. In June 2026, state-owned defense manufacturer PT Pindad unveiled the Pindad Electric Pedicab — a three-wheel electric vehicle developed under a direct directive from President Prabowo Subianto. The initiative aims to gradually replace traditional gasoline-powered pedicabs with cleaner, more efficient electric alternatives across the country.
The Pindad Electric Pedicab is a small three-wheel vehicle powered by an electric motor, designed as a modern evolution of the conventional pedicab. It comes equipped with a range of modern features, including an LED display, pedal-assist system, front and rear lights, turn signals, a folding canopy frame, throttle control, and suspension. The vehicle also features a digital speedometer and disc brakes, with a maximum speed of 15 kilometers per hour.
President Prabowo previously stated his vision for Indonesia’s pedicabs: “In the future, all pedicabs in Indonesia must use electric motors. Pedicab drivers over 70 years old will no longer be allowed.” He instructed relevant ministers to develop concrete plans, and Pindad responded with the electric pedicab as a strategic government initiative for commercial vehicle modernization, supporting the development of an eco-friendly vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.
The unveiling follows other policy signals supporting electric three-wheelers across the archipelago. In late May 2026, the Yogyakarta city government announced plans to gradually replace motorized tricycles operating in the Malioboro area with government-subsidized electric tricycles. Imanudin Aziz, head of the Parking Management Division at the Yogyakarta Transportation Agency, stated that 50 motorized tricycles would initially be replaced with electric units, noting that motorized tricycles are not only environmentally unfriendly but also fail to meet vehicle eligibility standards.
For electric tricycle manufacturers targeting Indonesia, these developments represent a significant market opportunity. The tropical climate across the Indonesian archipelago — characterized by high humidity, heavy seasonal rainfall, and coastal salt exposure — demands vehicles that can withstand harsh conditions without corroding.
Guangxi Dachuan Vehicle Co., Ltd. is well-positioned to meet this demand. The company’s stainless steel electric tricycles are engineered specifically for humid tropical environments, with rust-proof bodies that maintain structural integrity even under constant exposure to monsoons and salt air. Available in 1.5m and 1.6m cargo bed configurations with a premium silver finish, the e-trikes deliver durable, low-maintenance performance for diverse applications — from passenger transport to last-mile cargo delivery.
Backed by the century-old heritage of the JIANSHE brand (founded 1889), Guangxi Dachuan also welcomes OEM/ODM orders, enabling Indonesian distributors, transport cooperatives, and municipal authorities to customize battery capacity, vehicle features, and branding to meet local requirements. As Indonesia modernizes its pedicabs and urban transport systems, reliable stainless steel e-trikes will play an essential role in the country‘s green mobility transformation.
